Preparing for College
Virtually all alumni enroll in four-year colleges and universities upon graduation. A significant portion of those Scholars continue on to some of the finest graduate programs in the nation. Some alumni have also earned national recognition through such fellowships and scholarships as the Presidential, Rhodes, Danforth, Fulbright, Morehead, and Angier B. Duke.
For these reasons, it is important for you and your family to research and investigate which college will meet your specific needs. Because college will offer the environment in which you will continue your process of self-evaluation and discovery, it is important to select a school that is just the right fit. Utilize school counseling/advising offices, web sites, admissions officers, and your A Better Chance program coordinator for assistance in this important process.
In the fall of senior year, each Scholar will receive a letter from Sandra E. Timmons, President of A Better Chance. This letter is addressed to college admissions officers and explains the nature of A Better Chance. Ms. Timmons will explain the history of A Better Chance, noting the achievements of our over 11,000 alumni and your role in carrying on this tradition. This letter will form a valuable piece of your college application package. When you include a copy with your college application materials, admissions officers will glimpse your background as an A Better Chance Scholar and properly appreciate its significance. A Better Chance measures its success in many ways, including the accomplishments of the students we place.
