Scholar Services
There are a variety of student services that are available to our Scholars through A Better Chance. From New Scholar Orientation to Scholar Gatherings in your region, there will be opportunities for Scholars to come together for networking and just to enjoy socializing. We provide college and career services to our students and offer information about a number of summer opportunities that are available. There are opportunities for leadership through the national Leadership Council and recognition for excellence through the Scholar Awards. Take full advantage of all of these great resources and make your Scholar experience the best that it can be!
Here are some student support highlights:
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL - The A Better Chance Leadership Council was established in 1995 to promote student leadership on the national level. The Council consists of up to sixteen Scholars in grades 10, 11, and 12 from across the country. These Scholars are known as Junior Fellows and receive a small stipend as a show of appreciation for their hard work. Applications to join the Leadership Council are mailed every spring to Scholar Award applicants who demonstrate leadership and responsibility. Under the direction of a staff liaison, a college-age alumnus acts as the Senior Fellow, or Chairperson, of the Leadership Council, coordinating the Council's activities from the New York office of A Better Chance. | ||||
The Council holds its annual meeting in New York every summer in the form of a leadership conference, which includes planning for the ensuing year as well as media training for Council members. The Council's primary focus is to make sure that the voice of the student body is heard in making decisions for the organization. At the same time, the Council works to improve communication within the A Better Chance Family. The Council also conducts the annual student fund drive: your opportunity to give back to A Better Chance. Dubbed "Dollar a Scholar," the Leadership Council has set forth a goal to get 100 percent participation from Scholars, with everyone giving at least $1 to support the organization this year. Through the "Dollar a Scholar" campaign, you can start to give back to A Better Chance right now and help make a difference in other lives.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES - Through the Business Partnership Program, A Better Chance retains a number of exclusive internship opportunities with outstanding business institutions. These opportunities are mailed on an annual basis. We also maintain a list of resources for your independent summer job and internship search. In the past, regional Program Coordinators have disseminated our resource list, but we look to make the list available electronically, so be sure to keep your e-mail address current in our files by staying in touch with your Program Coordinator.
